Characteristics of a Modern Analytics Platform in Kenya
Modern analytics platform is mostly driven by gains in price/hardware(CPUs, memory, disk and networks), Wayne Eckerson writes on the report on Analytics Platform.
From his list of ten characteristics we picked some which we believe are crucial in our East Africa region and Kenya especially.
1. Be deployed anywhere.
A modern BI platform has to support emerged platforms like cloud, web and mobile without extra need for coding. IBM Cognos is very much in the forefront on this.
2. Connect to any Data Source
The analytics should read and process structured, semi structured and unstructured data. Basically, it should provide connectors to relational, OLAP, in-memory, Big data(hadoop), and NoSQL databases. And social media like twitter, facebook, news sites, blogs, review sites and youtube. A great example of social media connector is the one provided by IBM Watson Analytics.
3. Collaboration
Modern analytics has to be shareable via email or chat. So a Finance exec can email fellow HR exec a report with annotations, images(smileys), or text explaining or giving insights to a report. Also the exec can have threaded discussions with anyone on any one report as long as the other has access. Additionally, tasks can be assigned by each other.
4. Pricing
Modern analytics with simplified and flexible pricing models. Definitely a free trial is a plus. The option of subscription model or on-premise with clear steps to moving to cloud is exemplified.
Also pricing structures with per user(with low minimum user requirement-5-10 users), per server or concurrent user.
