2016 was the year of the Brexit vote, the Rio Olympics, and the US presidential election. It was also the year of ransomware. Throughout 2016, we watched ransomware grow in popularity, frequency, and effectiveness. We also observed the introduction of ransomware-as-a-service, where people with few technical skills were able to franchise ransomware. The entities acquired the ransomware from a developer in exchange for a cut of any money they extorted from their victims.
Unfortunately, many of the organizations that were targeted and infected ended up paying the ransom, which served to both fund and encourage the developers of this sort of malware.
