There are 7 different types of firewalls in use today in our networks. And they range from screened host to proxy server firewalls. However, hybrid firewalls will be used more in the future. Mainly, because they can work both in the network and application level. The advantage of this setup is a uniform security maintenance across an organization.

2 Hybrid Designs

The are two hybrid designs favored in modern firewalls are:
1. CPU + OTS ASIC – A CPU is augmented by Off The Shelf (OTS) processor.
2. CPU + Custom ASIC – A CPU is linked to a number of custom-built application-specific integrated circuits.
